Collection: Art Blakey

The American Art Blakey (1919–1990) was a leading drummer and leader of the Jazz Messengers, the most important hard bop group. He started as a pianist, but soon turned to drums, playing with great figures such as Fletcher Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker. In 1955, he founded the Jazz Messengers, which evolved into a "jazz school," showcasing musicians like Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Wynton Marsalis. Blakey stood out for his explosive rhythm and relentless energy, keeping the hard bop tradition alive during a time of musical experimentation. His influence remains crucial in contemporary jazz.
