American John Coltrane (1926–1967) was a leading jazz saxophonist and composer, with an enormous influence on 20th-century music. He began his career in big bands, collaborated with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, and evolved into a leading figure of the modern sound. In the late 1950s, he established himself with the albums Blue Train and Giant Steps. In the 1960s, his quartet created masterpieces like My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme, which combined musical and spiritual exploration. His contribution to modal and free jazz shaped new directions, and his legacy continues to inspire musicians internationally.
